Five Celebrities Who Are Also Good Card Players

Friday, January 26th, 2018

Stars such as Ronaldo and Kevin Hart have played in big professional poker tournaments. These two are just a snippet of celebrities that have played cards. In fact, if you take a look at all of the celebrities who play poker for example then some very big names are on that list. Here we will look at five leading celebrities and how they are all excellent at playing cards and especially poker.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck needs no introduction. He has been one of the biggest stellar names in Hollywood for the past 20 years. His name has been at the very top since he starred alongside Bruce Willis in the movie “Armageddon” in 1998. However not many people realise that he is not only a very good poker player but also a successful one.

Affleck has done something that many professional poker players haven’t achieved. That is to win a $10,000 buy-in tournament. He did this in 2004 when he captured first place in the California State Poker Championship picking up a cool $356,400 in the process. Affleck is also an accomplished card counter too and has practiced this art inside casinos many times in the past.

Teddy Sheringham

When people think of Manchester United and their recent history, they think about the glorious treble year of 1999 and the huge success under Sir Alex Ferguson. Teddy Sheringham played a huge role in that success scoring many crucial goals including the famous late equaliser in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

However, Sheringham is also a very accomplished poker player and has amassed around a quarter of a million dollars in tournament earnings. He is also a face in cash games too and has been known to appear at the Victoria Club in London on more than one occasion.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is known as the most successful Olympic swimmer of all time. Nobody in the world could touch him in the pool and many of his records will last a long time. Phelps has reached a tournament final table and is a very keen backer of poker players. His goal is to improve his poker game to a professional level and who would back against him doing exactly that?

Phelps is a regular visitor to the card rooms of Las Vegas and I am certainly not betting against him being in the winner’s circle in the near future for a major poker title. Phelps recently came 3rd in a 2017 Poker Tournament in Las Vegas. Although he only picked up $940, he is pumping enough time and money into his poker education for him to be a potential future threat.

Nick Cassavetes

This famous film director is a force to be reckoned with at the poker table. Cassavetes is a regular in the High-stakes poker games in Las Vegas and on GSN. He has total tournament winnings of $142,000 but in 2005 he came very close to getting to the final table of the WSOP main event in Las Vegas. He outlasted several thousand players and pocketed a cool $93,000.

He is certainly a player to be feared whether it is poker tournaments or cash games. Nick Cassavetes is certainly no “poker fish” that’s for sure.

Jennifer Tilly

Jennifer Tilly in many ways is the most successful poker player on my list. She has been a regular face on the televised High-stakes poker games pitting her wits against the best cash game players in the world. Tilly has won a $1000 WSOP Ladies Event and has around $600,000 in total tournament winnings.

Tilly has often been criticised for poor play in televised poker but her game has come on in leaps and bounds since then. So much so that she won a $5000 buy-in event at the Bellagio picking up nearly $125,000 in prize money.
